How does Reiki work? A simple explanation

How does Reiki work?

If you’ve ever wondered how someone can lie there, hands barely touching you, and you come away feeling lighter, calmer, more like yourself again… you’re not alone. It’s one of the questions I get asked more than almost anything else. So let’s talk about it properly.

At its heart, Reiki is a Japanese healing practice that works with your body’s own life force energy, known as Ki. Here’s the simple version. Reiki isn’t something a practitioner does to you. It’s something they help you connect back to.

The energy behind the healing

Every living thing has energy moving through it. Some traditions call it Ki, others call it Chi or Prana. Different names, same idea: there’s a life force flowing through your body, and when that flow gets blocked or sluggish, that’s often when we start to feel it. Tired. Anxious. Foggy. Not quite ourselves.

A Reiki practitioner has trained to sense where that energy feels stuck or depleted, and to channel it back into flow using their hands, usually placed lightly on or just above the body. You stay fully clothed. Nothing is forced. It’s a receiving, not a doing.

What actually happens in a session

Most sessions follow a similar gentle rhythm. You’ll lie down, get comfortable, and the practitioner will place their hands in a series of positions, moving slowly from your head down to your feet. Some people feel warmth. Some feel a kind of tingling. Some feel absolutely nothing at all and still walk away feeling more settled than when they arrived.

There’s no one “right” way to experience it. Your body knows what it needs, and Reiki simply gives it the space to do that work.

Is there any science behind it?

I’ll always be honest with you here, because I think you deserve that. Reiki sits in a space that modern science hasn’t fully mapped yet. Some studies suggest it can support relaxation and reduce stress and anxiety, and plenty of people (myself very much included) can speak to how different they feel afterwards. But the research is still developing, and results across studies are mixed. Reiki isn’t a replacement for medical care, and no reputable practitioner will ever tell you it is.

What it can offer, alongside whatever else you’re doing for your health, is a genuine sense of calm. A pause. A chance to come back to yourself for an hour, away from everything that’s been pulling at you. If anxiety is part of what’s brought you here, I’ve written more specifically about that in Reiki for anxiety: how it helps and what to expect.

Why it doesn’t need to make sense to work

Here’s something I always tell people who come to me feeling a bit sceptical, and honestly, most people do at first. You don’t need to believe in anything for Reiki to be worth trying. You don’t need crystals or chanting or a particular worldview. You just need to be willing to lie down and let your body have a few moments of stillness it probably hasn’t had in a long time.

So much of what we carry- the tension in our shoulders, the tightness in our chest, the racing thoughts at 2 a.m.- isn’t something we can think our way out of. Reiki works underneath all of that. It’s not about fixing you, because you were never broken to begin with. It’s about helping you remember what your body already knows how to do.

Can Reiki work from a distance?

You might have come across the idea of distant Reiki, where a practitioner sends healing without being in the same room as you. It sounds unusual, I know, but for many people it’s just as effective as an in-person session. I’ve written a full, honest breakdown of the evidence in Distant Reiki: what it is and whether it works, if you’d like to explore that further.

Where to go from here

However you’ve found your way to this page, whether you’re stressed, exhausted, curious, or simply looking for something gentler than everything else you’ve tried, I want you to know this. You don’t have to have it all figured out before you start. Reiki meets you exactly where you are.

If you’d like to experience it for yourself, you can find a qualified practitioner near you through our directory on our website, Home of Reiki. There’s no pressure and no expectation. Just an invitation, whenever you’re ready, to come home to yourself.

With love and light, Carolina x
