Signs your home needs an energy clearing
Your home holds more than furniture and belongings. It holds energy, the residue of everything that’s happened within its walls. Arguments, illness, stress, grief and even the history of previous occupants can all leave an energetic imprint. Over time, if that energy isn’t cleared, it can start to affect how you feel, how you sleep and how you function day to day.
If you’ve been feeling flat, unsettled or like something at home just isn’t quite right, this is worth paying attention to. You might be experiencing the signs that your home needs an energy clearing.
What does stagnant energy actually feel like?
When energy becomes stuck or heavy in a space, it tends to happen gradually. That can make it easy to explain away as stress, tiredness or just the pace of life. But feeling worn out and carrying a quiet, persistent heaviness that rest doesn’t shift are two different things.
In Tibetan Feng Shui, the life-force energy within a home, known as chi, needs to move freely to support the people living there. When chi becomes blocked or stagnant, the home stops feeling supportive. Instead of being a place of sanctuary, it can start to feel draining.

Seven signs your home may need an energy clearing
1) You feel inexplicably tired at home
You get a reasonable night’s sleep, but you wake up feeling heavy. Or you notice that you feel more energised when you’re out of the house than when you’re in it. This is one of the more common signs that the energy in your space isn’t flowing as it should.
2)The atmosphere feels heavy or flat
There’s no specific reason for it, but your home just doesn’t feel warm or welcoming. Rooms that should feel comfortable feel oppressive, or you find yourself avoiding certain areas without knowing why.
3) Arguments or tension keep surfacing
Conflict happens in every household, but when disagreements become more frequent or intense than usual, particularly in specific rooms, it’s worth considering whether the energy in the space is contributing. Stagnant or disrupted energy can exacerbate emotional reactivity and make it harder to feel calm.
4)You’ve been through a significant life event
Moving house, a bereavement, a relationship breakdown, a period of serious illness or even just a prolonged stretch of stress can all leave an energetic residue. These events don’t just affect you emotionally. They affect the space around you. An energy clearing after major life changes helps to reset the atmosphere and create a clean foundation.
5) You’ve moved into a new home
Every building carries the energetic history of the people who lived there before. That history isn’t always negative, but it isn’t yours either. A clearing when you move in removes whatever came before and allows you to establish your own energy in the space from the beginning.
6) Sleep is consistently disturbed
Difficulty sleeping, restless nights, or waking repeatedly without a clear physical cause can sometimes be linked to the energy in a bedroom. In Feng Shui, the bedroom is considered one of the most energetically significant rooms in the home because of the time you spend there in a receptive state.
7)Nothing seems to flow
You’re putting in the effort across different areas of your life, but things feel blocked. Opportunities don’t materialise. Relationships feel stuck. Finances seem to plateau. When this pattern is persistent and unexplained, looking at the energy of your home is a reasonable and practical step.
Why timing matters
You don’t have to wait until things feel really wrong before considering a clearing. Many people choose to clear their home seasonally, treating it as maintenance rather than crisis response. The end of a season, the start of a new year, or any significant transition is a natural prompt to refresh the energy of your space.
The longer stagnant energy sits undisturbed, the more entrenched it can become. A home that hasn’t been cleared for years may have multiple layers of accumulated energy, from different occupants, different events, and different emotional periods. That doesn’t make it impossible to clear, but it does mean that earlier attention tends to make the process simpler.
Incense for Clearing
What an energy clearing involves
An energy clearing is a deliberate, structured process of removing stagnant or disruptive energy from a space and creating the conditions for positive, balanced chi to move freely.
When I clear I use a combination of sacred Tibetan incense, meditations, blessings and clear intentions, working through the home systematically. The process draws on the principles of Tibetan Feng Shui, which places particular emphasis on intention and conscious awareness alongside the practical elements of space work.
After a clearing, most people notice a shift quite quickly. The home feels lighter, easier to breathe in and more like somewhere they want to be. Over time, the effects tend to deepen as the space settles into a cleaner energetic state.
If you’d prefer to begin with some light clearing work yourself, using sage, incense or other sacred tools is a good starting point for refreshing the atmosphere between professional clearings.
Don’t overlook the physical
Before any energy clearing, it’s worth doing a physical tidy and declutter. Clutter is one of the most consistent blockers of energy flow in a home. It collects in corners, weighs on your awareness, and makes it harder for chi to move. You don’t need a perfect home, but giving the space a clean sweep, especially in areas that feel particularly heavy, creates the right conditions for the clearing to be effective.
If you’d like to go deeper into decluttering with intention, the Sacred Spaces blog walks through how to approach that process in a way that addresses both the physical and energetic layers.
Take the next step
If any of the signs above feel familiar, it may be time to look at what your home is holding on to. An energy clearing is a practical, grounding step, not a dramatic or complicated one. It’s simply a way of tending to your space with the same care you’d give to any other aspect of your wellbeing.
