What is Feng Shui and Energy Clearing?

If your home feels heavy, unsettled, or just not quite right, you’re not imagining it. The way energy moves through a space, or doesn’t, has a real and tangible effect on how you feel inside it. Feng shui is the practice of understanding and working with that energy, and energy clearing is where that work often has to begin.

This isn’t about interior design trends or moving furniture around for the sake of it. It’s a considered, intentional approach to how your environment supports your life. When it’s working, your home feels calmer, clearer and more like yours. When it isn’t, you often feel it in your body before you can name what’s wrong.

What Feng Shui actually is:

Feng shui is an ancient practice rooted in Chinese and Tibetan wisdom. The literal translation of the words is “wind and water,” both of which are natural forces that move, flow and shape the world around them. At its core, feng shui is the art of aligning your environment with the natural flow of life-force energy, which in Chinese tradition is called chi (also written as qi).

Chi is the energy present in everything: in people, in nature, in buildings and in the objects within them. It’s not a mystical concept, it’s a way of describing the quality and movement of energy in a space. When chi flows well, a home feels alive, welcoming and supportive. When it stagnates or becomes blocked, the space can feel draining, stuck or oppressive, even if everything looks fine on the surface.

Feng shui works with three main factors: the flow of energy through a space, the arrangement of furniture and objects within it, and the intention behind the choices you make. In Tibetan feng shui, which is the tradition I work with, intention carries particular weight. It’s not enough to move a lamp or place a plant. The awareness and purpose you bring to each adjustment is what gives it meaning and effect.

Why your home holds energy?

Your home absorbs everything that happens within it. The conversations, the arguments, the grief, the anxiety, the joy, all of it leaves an energetic trace. Previous occupants leave their mark too. If someone lived in fear, financial stress or conflict in your home before you arrived, that energy doesn’t disappear when they move out. It can linger in the walls, the corners, the fabric of the building itself.

This isn’t unusual. Every building has its own energetic signature, shaped by the land it sits on, the people who built it, the lives that have been lived inside it and the events that have unfolded there over time. That signature affects everyone who spends time in the space, often in ways they can’t immediately explain.

You might notice it as a persistent low mood in a particular room, a restlessness that stops you sleeping, a heaviness that doesn’t seem to have a clear cause, or a sense that the home just doesn’t feel like yours, even after years of living there. These are common experiences, and they’re worth taking seriously.

The nine areas of your home:

One of the most useful tools in feng shui is the bagua, an energetic map that divides any space into nine areas. Each area corresponds to a different dimension of your life. When you overlay the bagua on your home and stand at your main entrance, you can begin to see how different parts of your space relate to different areas of your experience.

The nine areas are:

  • Career and life path — your sense of direction and purpose

  • Knowledge and inner wisdom — learning, self-awareness and clarity

  • Family and roots — your foundations, support and ancestral connections

  • Wealth and abundance — self-worth, flow and what you allow yourself to receive

  • Health — the central area of the home, governing overall wellbeing

  • Helpful people and support — the guides, mentors and relationships that carry you

  • Creativity and joy — expression, pleasure and the lighter side of life

  • Relationships and love — connection, intimacy and how you relate to others

  • Fame and purpose — how you show up in the world and what you’re known for

This is where feng shui becomes genuinely useful rather than decorative. If a particular area of your life feels stuck or difficult, the corresponding area of your home is worth looking at. What’s there? Is it cluttered, neglected, dark or blocked? Is the energy in that space supporting what you want it to, or working against it?

What energy clearing is and why it comes first?

Energy clearing, sometimes called space clearing, is the process of releasing stagnant, heavy or dissonant energy from a space so that fresh chi can move through it. Think of it like opening the windows in a room that’s been shut up for months. The air doesn’t have to be visibly dirty for the difference to be felt.

Before any feng shui work can be effective, the energy in the space needs to be clear. You can arrange your home beautifully and place every object with intention, but if the underlying energy is stuck or compromised, the adjustments won’t land as they should. Clearing creates the clean foundation that everything else builds on.

  • Energy clearing is particularly important at certain times:

  • When you move into a new home or space

  • After a significant life event such as a bereavement, separation, serious illness or redundancy

  • When you’ve been through a prolonged period of stress, conflict or anxiety within the home

  • When you’ve had ongoing difficulties, with health, relationships or finances, that don’t seem to shift despite other efforts

  • At the change of seasons, as a way of marking transitions and refreshing the energy of your home

How energy clearing works in practice:

There are several approaches to energy clearing, and they can be used individually or in combination depending on the space and what’s needed.

Smudging is one of the most widely used methods. It involves burning specific herbs, most commonly sage, cedar or sweetgrass, and moving the smoke deliberately through a space, paying particular attention to corners, doorways and areas where energy tends to settle. Each herb carries its own properties. Sage is associated with purification, cedar with grounding and releasing heaviness, and sweetgrass with inviting in positive, supportive energy.

Sound is another powerful tool. A hand bell, Tibetan singing bowl or Tibetan cymbals can be used to break up stagnant energy, particularly in tight corners, behind furniture and in spaces that don’t get much light or movement. Sound travels where smoke can’t and reaches parts of a room that are difficult to access physically.

Incense carries intention and shifts the energetic quality of a space in a subtler, more sustained way. Different resins and blends, frankincense, white copal, dragon’s blood, have been used in spiritual practice across many traditions for exactly this purpose.

Intention and blessing run through all of these methods. In Tibetan feng shui, it’s not only the physical act of clearing that matters, it’s the conscious awareness and purposeful intention you bring to it. As you move through a space, you’re not just neutralising what’s there, you’re actively inviting in what you want the space to hold going forward. This might be peace, clarity, warmth, support, or a specific quality of energy that feels right for your home and your life.

A professional energy clearing session brings all of these elements together in a structured, intentional way. It includes an assessment of the home’s energy, the clearing itself, and a blessing designed to restore harmony between you and your space.

The connection between your space and your wellbeing:

When you’re busy, stressed, anxious or overwhelmed, it’s easy to think of your home as just the backdrop to your life, the place where you crash at the end of a long day. But your environment is actively affecting how you feel, how you sleep, how you think and how you recover.

A home that’s energetically clear and intentionally arranged can genuinely support your nervous system. It can help you feel calmer when you walk through the door, sleep more deeply at night and recover more effectively from the demands of daily life. That’s not a small thing, especially if you’re going through a difficult period.

Conversely, a home that’s energetically heavy or congested can amplify stress, slow your recovery and make it harder to feel settled, even in a space you know and love. You don’t have to be particularly sensitive to energy to feel this. Most people notice it, even if they don’t have a language for what they’re experiencing.

Small shifts and bigger work:

One of the most reassuring things about feng shui is that you don’t have to overhaul your entire home to start experiencing a difference. Small, conscious shifts, clearing a drawer that’s been stuffed full for years, moving a piece of furniture so it no longer blocks a doorway, placing a meaningful object in the area of your home that corresponds to a part of your life you want to support, can have a real effect.

That said, if the underlying energy of your home is significantly stuck or if you’ve moved into a space that’s carrying the weight of previous occupants, a full energy clearing session is the right place to start. It creates the conditions for everything else to work properly.

The intention you bring matters just as much as the action. Before you make any adjustment, pause and ask yourself what you want this space to support. That question alone can shift the quality of attention you bring to your home, which is where feng shui always begins.

Working with a practitioner:

If you’re curious about feng shui but not sure where to start, or if your home has been feeling consistently difficult and you want support to understand why, working with a practitioner is the most direct route to clarity and change.

A professional session will look at your home as a whole, assess the flow of energy through it and identify what’s supporting you and what isn’t. If energy clearing is needed, it will be done with the appropriate tools, intention and care. Feng shui adjustments can then be made in a way that’s specific to your space, your life and what you’re trying to create.

Your home can be one of the most powerful supports you have. When it’s working with you, it’s easier to rest, to recover, to feel clear and to move forward. That’s what feng shui, and energy clearing, make possible.
