Reiki and your nervous system: why you feel calmer after

If you've ever had a Reiki session, you might remember the moment your body seemed to let go. Your breathing slowed, your shoulders dropped away from your ears, and maybe your tummy gave a little gurgle that made you smile. That isn't your imagination, and it isn't just "being relaxed"; your nervous system is changing gear.

Reiki and your nervous system are closely connected. Reiki creates the gentle, safe conditions your body needs to move out of stress mode and into rest mode, where your body repairs, digests, sleeps, and heals. Understanding this can make Reiki feel much less mysterious, and much more like something you already know how to do.

Why this matters when life feels too much

When you're busy, stressed or carrying more than you can comfortably hold, it's easy to think the problem is all in your head. You tell yourself to calm down, to stop overthinking, to just relax. And when that doesn't work, you can end up feeling as though you're failing at something that should be simple.

The truth is, much of what you're feeling happens in your body before your mind ever gets a say. Your nervous system is quietly deciding, moment by moment, whether you're safe. Once you understand how that works, you can stop blaming yourself and start giving your body what it actually needs.

The two modes your body moves between

Your autonomic nervous system (the part that runs automatically, without you having to think about it) has two main branches that work together a bit like an accelerator and a brake.

The first is your sympathetic nervous system, often called "fight or flight". When it switches on, your heart beats faster, your breathing becomes quicker and shallower, your muscles tense and stress hormones such as adrenaline and cortisol rise. This is brilliant in a genuine emergency, because it gets you ready to act.

The second is your parasympathetic nervous system, often called "rest and digest". This is your body's natural brake. Your heart rate settles, your breathing deepens, digestion switches back on, and your body turns its attention to repair. Much of this calming response travels along the vagus nerve, a long nerve that runs from your brainstem through your chest and into your belly.

Neither mode is good or bad. You need both. Problems tend to arise when you keep your foot on the accelerator so long that your body forgets how to find the brake.

When you get stuck in survival mode

Modern life rarely gives your body the "all clear". Emails, money worries, caring responsibilities, news headlines, and a constant stream of notifications can keep your stress response gently simmering in the background day after day.

When that happens, you might notice things like:

  • trouble getting to sleep, or waking at 3am with a busy mind

  • tight shoulders, a clenched jaw or tension headaches

  • a sensitive or unsettled tummy

  • feeling wired but tired, or snappy over small things

  • finding it hard to concentrate or switch off, even on holiday

None of this means something is wrong with you. It simply means your nervous system has been working hard to keep you safe, and it hasn't yet received the signal to stand down.

How Reiki helps your body feel safe again

This is where Reiki comes in. During a session, you lie fully clothed, warm, and supported while a practitioner gently places their hands on or just above your body. You don't need to do, achieve, or get anything right. For many people, that alone is unusual. It might be the first time in weeks that you've been given permission to simply be.

From a nervous system perspective, everything about a Reiki session sends the same quiet message: you're safe now. Calm, gentle touch, a peaceful room, a slow, steady presence from the person caring for you, and time without demands all help your body ease off the accelerator and find the brake again.

Practitioners and clients often notice the signs of this shift as it happens. Your breath might lengthen on its own. Your tummy might gurgle as digestion switches back on (a classic rest-and-digest sign). You might feel heavy, warm, tingly or deeply sleepy. Sometimes a small twitch happens as muscles let go, or a few tears fall as emotion that's been held tightly finally has room to move. All of these are completely normal, and they're your body doing exactly what it knows how to do.

In Reiki, we talk about life force energy flowing more freely, and you can hold both understandings side by side. You don't need to choose between the spiritual and the physical. Many people find that Reiki gives them a felt experience of peace that their body then begins to remember. If you'd like to explore the energy side more deeply, you can read more about how Reiki works and what happens during a session.

What the research says, honestly

Science is still catching up with what many people experience on the treatment couch, and you deserve an honest picture. Research into Reiki is growing, but most studies so far are small, and results vary.

That said, some early studies have looked specifically at the nervous system. A small 2004 trial found that people receiving Reiki showed reductions in heart rate and blood pressure compared with a placebo group. Another small study of nurses experiencing burnout found improvements in heart rate variability (a measure of how flexibly your nervous system can shift between stress and rest) after Reiki sessions.

These findings are encouraging, but they're not conclusive, and larger, well-designed studies are still needed. Reiki works beautifully alongside medical and psychological care but never replaces it, so if you're struggling with your health, please keep your GP or healthcare team in the loop.

Coming back to yourself

Perhaps the most hopeful part of all this is that your nervous system isn't fixed. It learns. Each time you experience genuine calm, your body gets a little more familiar with the way back there. That's why many people find Reiki's benefits build gently over a few sessions, and why so many go on to learn self-Reiki so they can offer themselves that same sense of safety at home, whenever they need it.

You're not broken, and you haven't lost the ability to feel peaceful. It's still there, beneath the noise, beneath the busyness, beneath all the holding on. Sometimes your body simply needs a quiet space and a kind pair of hands to remind it.

If you'd like to experience this for yourself, you can contact me on 07723325924 to discuss, and if you'd love to give yourself this gift every day, our Reiki training courses will show you how, gently and step by step. When you're ready, we're here.
